COMMON LYMPHOCYTES' DISORDERS
Some common lymphocyte disorders are:
🔅 Lymphocytosis
– This is a condition where the lymphocyte count is higher than normal, which can indicate an infection, inflammation, or cancer. Lymphocytosis can be caused by:
Viral infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, or influenza;
Bacterial infections, such as whooping cough;
Parasitic infections, such as malaria;
Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus;
Allergic reactions to medications;
Stress related to a medical emergency;
Smoking; or
Removal of the spleen.
– Lymphocytosis can also be a sign of blood cancers, such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
🔅 Lymphocytopenia
– This is a condition where the lymphocyte count is lower than normal, which can increase the risk of infections and diseases. Lymphocytopenia can be caused by:
Inherited disorders, such as DiGeorge syndrome or Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome;
Acquired disorders, such as HIV infection, AIDS, or tuberculosis;
Medications that suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy;
Malnutrition or starvation; or
Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
🔅 Lymphoproliferative disorders:
– These are a group of conditions where the lymphocytes grow and multiply abnormally, causing tumors or enlarged lymph nodes. Lymphoproliferative disorders can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
– Some examples of lymphoproliferative disorders are follicular lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), and large granular lymphocytic leukemia
